Hints on completing a solid application

Being specific with the problem you’re investigating.

In this area, we’re looking for a statement or two that is centered around a specific problem you’d like to investigate. Try to avoid general statements that talk about the impact of the solution you might have in mind.

  • Example of a good submission: As large retail store customers, it is frustrating when we can’t find a particular item and must track down an associate to show us where the item is. We want to investigate if retail stores would be willing to pay for a technology solution that makes it easier for customers to find things in the store.
  • Example of a not-so-good submission: This solution will disrupt the way businesses communicate with their customers.

Being specific about the customer you’re investigating.

We don’t expect you to know everything about the customer you’re investigating – this course will help you hone your understanding of who you’re innovating for. But we do expect you to have thought a bit about your customer’s lifestyle, their gender, their occupation, and what problem they might be experiencing.

  • Example of a good submission: Stay-at-home Moms in residential neighborhoods with elementary school aged kids who are looking for an after school treat or a good behavior reward for their children.
  • Example of a not-so-good submission: Males, aged 35 to 45, who like cars.

Being specific about interesting achievements.

Awards and recognition are fine here, but we’re not looking for ‘credentials.’ This is a place for you to brag about something that you’re proud of having accomplished.

About the Video:  no professionally created videos, please.

This should be a video that you create, and shouldn’t be professionally edited. The video should be between 50 seconds and 1 minute (hint: try for 40 seconds and you’ll be more likely to hit the 1 minute mark). We’d like to see you and your co-founders talk a little about your backgrounds and why you’re interested in investigating the problem you wrote about above.

Landing Page.

This is an optional supplement to show off your idea in a visual way.  Keep it to a simple one page that leads with a value proposition and a call to action (asking for an email address, for example).  It should also cost you little to nothing to complete.

There are a ton of free tools are available to help you accomplish this without coding or purchasing a website address. Launchrock, and Strikingly are a couple great ones that are easy to get started with.

Good Luck!

We hope you’re as excited as we are to get this thing going – innovation is our lifeblood, and we get passionate about discovering problems that our customers have. We hope that we can inspire you to be your best.

We will review your submission and send you a message regarding your acceptance status no later than Tuesday, 22 March 2016.
